Turning Gaborone into a startup city

Gaborone has quickly grown and with a lot of people coming from all different directions to find greener pastures it has been hard nut to crack to find job fast. Fresh graduates from all universities are being forced to take all that comes their way as long as it pays the bills. Where is this creativity going if Gaborone becomes like Gaborone Dam itself? It’s hard to bear the scramble is at high stake. However there is a silver lining to turn Gaborone city as the biggest startup city.
Though it’s not obvious at first glance, we are not far from the ripe as there is an ecosystem and entrepreneurship empowering rising from different organizations like Botswana Innovation Hub, universities and many more. However all these they do not sprint new startups to being created. If possible some are birth; they are much likelihood to not survive the test of entrepreneurship. In conjunction, there are few key initiatives which are vital to cultivate the ecosystem and leap innovation to take root.
Data
Breaking out data is the lifeline for new startups. When organizations are liberal to share appropriate data without withholding it can lead to impressive new startups and this means better driven solutions. It could be for the organization or however beneficially to our own economy as data was collected well to initiate such solutions. Meanwhile such data can also come at lower cost for innovators or entrepreneurs through competitions in order to come up with innovative solutions to solve our own backyard problems. In nutshell we have had problems with our transportation systems, revenue systems, power, farming, education and others. By simply sharing data more startups will be created and such startups need sharing of data to be implemented and hence more innovative solutions to our problems.

Cooperate and collaborate
Creating the atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation within the startups can spring innovation and creativity. Just like within Botswana Innovation Hub incubating some startups, companies need to also collaborate with startups. While this would bring a huge competition it will spearhead innovation for success within startups as they collaborate to learn from each other. By fostering this spirit stronger networks of entrepreneurship would be built to enhance the overall ecosystem of business and a rapid growth.

Public official’s involvement
In order to further growth of any ecosystem, we need public officials getting involved to foster entrepreneurial environment. When officials are involved to entrepreneurial programs and organizations would make it easier for prospective entrepreneurs to be interested to come to invest in our local startups and by doing this it will also welcome more opportunities for potential implants. Also, public official’s involvement would make it easier for prospective entrepreneurs to meet right people with little difficulty as a way of building good connections.
